Field Trip B: Television City

bob barker
The king of daytime television, Bob Barker. It’s cold in the studio,
but leave your fur at home!

You’ll have to be an early riser for this one, because we’re going to The Price Is Right! We’ll head over to CBS Television City, assuming Bob is still alive!

When Elvis Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time in 1956, he taped his performance here (did you hear that Dianah Dulany?), a studio later made famous as the place where The Carol Burnett Show, The Sonny & Cher Show and dozens of other CBS programs originated. The imposing building lies just to the north of Farmers Market, bearing the familiar eye logo of the CBS network.

Over the years, some of the biggest hits on TV have been taped at CBS TV City, including the original Twilight Zone (with Rod Serling), variety shows like The Smothers Brothers, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, Tony Orlando & Dawn and The Jacksons - and talk shows like Art Linkletter’s House Party, The Dinah Shore Show, The Mike Douglas Show, The Merv Griffin Show and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilbourn.

We’ll have procured tickets for you, but they overbook, so you have to get there early (by 6 am) if you want to get in. They’ll do interviews in the morning, hoping to find their contestants, and then we’ll return in the early afternoon for the show, assuming we’ve gotten in.

After we’ve made our shot at getting on the show, we’ll head over to the historic Farmer’s Market, an amazing outdoor array of low-priced eateries and shops.

The Grove

After dining, we’ll wander through the Grove, one of the most unique outdoor shopping malls in the city, created to feel like a small town. Then we’ll head back for the 2:00 taping.

Jimmy Kimmel

In the evening, it’s more television! We’ve arranged tickets for you to Jimmy Kimmel Live located one block from the hotel. Smart, topical humor is the norm with Kimmel, poking fun at everything from politics to the media. Plus, Kimmel’s late-night stunts are garnering lots of attention. Whether it’s having Quentin Tarantino guest host or Enrique Iglesias working at a hot dog stand, the laughs never seem to stop.*

Late night, join your friends for cocktails.

Cost: $15.

* If you’re on Field Trip B, the Hollywood Bowl is an option for you at night, rather than Jimmy Kimmel, if you choose. The cost for that version of the field trip is $50 and includes dinner.
