Welcome to the Actlete Village!

roosevelt

This year’s Actlete Village is the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Home of the first Academy Awards, the hotel is a stunning reminder of Hollywood’s early days. Built in 1927 by investors including Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks and named for Theodore Roosevelt, the Roosevelt Hotel is Hollywood’s only historic hotel still in operation today - having just celebrated its 75th anniversary with a $15 million renovation. The rooms are a mix of midcentury and contemporary design, and the beautiful outdoor pool features a mural by David Hockney.

The hotel is legendary not only for its Academy Award pedigree, but as the center of many of Hollywood’s early activities, including home to the television show This is Your Life. Bill “Bojangles” Robinson also taught Shirley Temple to dance on the lobby stairs.

It also has several ghost legends. Although Montgomery Clift only lived at the Roosevelt for three months, he has left a lasting impression. The talented but tormented actor, who died in 1966 of coronary artery disease, stayed in Room 928 during 1952 while playing gloomy bugler Private Prewitt in From Here to Eternity. Evidently, Clift’s own eternity is part of this room. Manifestations of his pacing presence have been felt by guests and hotel staff since his death at the age of 45. There are said to be cold spots in the room, but reports vary as to the exact locations. Sit in the right place, though, and you may feel an otherworldly hand pat your shoulder. There is also a rumor of a grand mirror in the hotel in which the image of Marilyn Monroe has been seen.
